I have been practising psychoanalytic psychotherapy for over ten years. I trained initially at the Tavistock Institute in London and then completed the full training in Adult Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy with the British Association of Psychotherapists (BAP). This training is registered with the British Psychoanalytic Council (BPC). The BPC is a professional organisation representing the profession of psychoanalytic psychotherapy. The organisations belonging to BPC offer the highest level of professional training available in the UK.
I have also held Honorary Psychotherapist posts in the NHS, in London and in Brighton, and have previously worked as a Counsellor in several different settings.
I am trained in intensive psychoanalytic psychotherapy which is based on the theory and practice of psychoanalysis. I work from once weekly up to five times weekly.
I see psychotherapy as an exploration undertaken by the therapist and patient together in order to gain an understanding of the unconscious processes which take place in our minds and get expressed in our relationships. I believe that it is these unconscious aspects which create unhappiness, resulting in low self-esteem or causing difficulties in relationships or at work. When these difficulties are re-experienced in the relationship with the psychotherapist they can be understood emotionally as well as intellectually and it is this ‘working through’ that leads to lasting change.
By demonstrating how unconscious factors affect our relationships and patterns of behaviour, and by tracing these factors back to their historical origins, we learn why we have them and we can see that they may no longer serve us well – in this way psychoanalytic psychotherapy helps people to cope better with the realities of everyday life.
Eventually the patient's life, including his or her behaviour, relationships and sense of self, changes in deep and abiding ways.
An initial consultation usually lasts up to one and a half hours. This is an opportunity to discuss what has brought you to seek psychotherapy and to find out whether psychoanalytic psychotherapy is the most appropriate treatment. Occasionally it may be necessary to meet more than once in order to determine this. If psychoanalytic psychotherapy is not the most appropriate treament you will be safely referred on to a relevant professional or service. The initial consultation costs £90.
